Because its a U shape, the middle attached to the chassis and the ends to each end of the axle, it allow the axle to move freely up and down both side simultaneously (for bumps like speed humps) but when the vehicle tries to lean over like fast cornering, to do this it has to twist the sway bar (one end of the U is pushed up more than the other) and the thicker the bar the more it will resist this twisting motion. To help the explanations, it's technically called an anti-sway bar, as in, reduces the amount of sway of a vehicle.
